Leith & North: Please email any news items to: news@leithandnorth.org.uk Living in a Foodie's Paradise: Farmers' Market comes to Leith Long view of various stalls (see alt tags below for more details) Ocean Terminal is hosting a Farmers Market twice monthly, on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, from 10.00 to 16.00. Leith & North's roving reporter was amazed at the variety of goods on offer - not only fine, well priced meats and fish, but there's plenty on offer for vegetarians, and gift opportunities too.

"Producers are interested in more than simply 'a shelf life' - meats are packed specifically for the day, fruits and vegetables are lifted and baking is done the night before to ensure everything is ripe, ready and perfect for eating."
Nick Paul, market organiser.

The organiser, Nick Paul, author of The Scottish Farmers' Market Cookbook, has a winning commitment to food, and is on a mission to bring people sensually exciting food that they can love and enjoy, fresh, and free from unneccesary toxins, and at fair prices which pass on their value to consumers. One of his many ideas which appealed to us was the creation of Scottish Tapas from the wide range of tasty produce available.

There are plenty of samples available and we reckon the produce would speak for itself. But on top of that, all of the producers are enthusiastic about what they are doing, thoroughly commited to their produce, and all the stalls we spoke to are commited to quality, sustainability, ecology and good stewardship of resources, and the organic movement.

As well as baking, dairy, fruit, meat and fish produce, there were traditionally made soap, jewellery and Scottish gifts on offer.

In many ways, this market, on Leither's doorsteps, is looking forwards to the past, showing how food will come to be produced in the coming decades. But today, it is a great way to spend an hour or so, have fun and pick up some treats to add something a little special for the weekend.

The market will run regularly at the Ocean Terminal the second and fourth Fridays of every month, from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Next dates are Friday March 27th, Friday April 10th, and Friday April 24th.
